ThiefCapture is a unique piece of software that provides an innovative command on XMPP via the ad-hoc server integrated into Adium since SoC 2007. With ThiefCapture, you can now log in to the same account from another computer (with a different resource) and use a webcam to capture a photo with ease. For users with recent MacBooks and MacBook Pros, ThiefCapture captures the image with an iSight camera. However, if you are using a device without one of these cameras, ThiefCapture can work with any webcam connected to your machine.
The captured image is then sent to you via the XMPP server without the risk of firewall issues via in-band messaging. Moreover, the program will respond with a list of public IP addresses of the other Macs. To activate ThiefCapture, you will have to log in to both machines with Adium and install the plugin. After that, you can navigate to the account's submenu in the 'File' menu, and select "Capture Thief (X)" where X is the resource of the machine with the data.
By using ThiefCapture, the victim can only see a brief flash of the camera activity LED before it's too late. Although its primary application is to catch a thief, ThiefCapture also has other beneficial uses as well. With its user-friendly interface and seamless integration with Adium, ThiefCapture is an invaluable addition to every Mac user’s software suite.
