TraffAcct

June 29, 2006
TraffAcct is a data platform that collects network traffic information to assist in determining link volumes and billing purposes.
Version 1.5
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage www.hughes.com.au
Developed by David J. Hughes
TraffAcct is an exceptional software platform that is designed to gather network traffic data for link volume calculations and billing purposes. With TraffAcct, you can monitor traffic usage on numerous network interfaces, including Ethernet, serial, ATM, and Frame Relay. It can also account for traffic on virtual connections, such as Dialup ISDN, IP Accounting, and VPDN connections, and is fully compatible with ADSL.

However, please note that this software platform is only compatible with UNIX/Linux operating systems. To install the software, you simply need to run the following command: ./configure make. Once you have installed the software, all scripts and files will be localized to your system, including the location of the software and Ember.

To access the web interface, you must adjust your document tree to link to the installation directory using a command similar to this: ln -s /usr/local/traffacct/www/usr/local/apache/htdocs/traffacct. Also, the data acquisition poller must be run at regular intervals, and we recommend running it every 5 minutes from cron. Depending on the format of your crontab file, add something similar to this: # # TraffAcct # */5 * * * * root /usr/local/traffacct/poller.

Please note that detailed instructions for configuring devices, circuits, and users are included in the user's guide. There are also some sample configuration files in the sample-config directory. For best performance, you should install Ember and the Ember SNMP module BEFORE attempting to install this software package. Ember and its modules can be downloaded from the Hughes Technologies website at www.Hughes.com.au. You should also configure your web server to execute .ehtml files through the web/html version of Ember called w3e. Please review the Ember documentation or the TraffAcct FAQ for more details.

In the latest release of TraffAcct, there have been some minor changes to the VPDN collectors error handling to better catch unexpected exceptions. Additionally, the year list issue has been fixed, and the year list is now comprised of the current year and the 4 previous years. Overall, we highly recommend TraffAcct for users who want to gather network traffic data in a reliable and efficient manner.
