Trafix is a free and animated simulation software that imitates the behavior of road traffic by simulating various vehicles such as cars, trucks and buses.
Trafix is a traffic simulator software that can simulate cars, trucks, and buses. The animated vehicles are displayed using X windows, and the code is written in C++. Input road files are created graphically using Xfig, which is a freely available, open-source UNIX drawing package. Trafix was developed by one of the authors using the GNU gcc compiler under the GNU-Linux operating system. The program was designed to verify the vehicle routing algorithms selected for this hardware simulator study.
Currently, Trafix is in a stage of development similar to the program precursors of fetchmail. Initially, an open source program was needed to verify the traffic movement algorithms, and after failing to find an existing solution, Trafix was generated to fill the void. Thus, the simulator is now available as a starting point for others who need to test traffic routing algorithms, roadway patterns, and so on.
The software follows a modular structure, allowing various components to be replaced as the user community requires. This flexibility also enables easy changes in the future, altering the current dependence on Xfig input files and X windows output displays. Furthermore, Trafix employs the Standard Template Library (STLPORT) routines wherever expedient to foster the reuse of code intended to both lead to efficiency and reduce errors.
