Transitions comes with a full suite of software, such as OpenOffice 2.2, The Gimp 2.2, Xara Xtreem, Firefox, Gaim, Gftp, Transmission, MPlayer, and Xmms.
In terms of the operating system itself, Puppy Linux is a small yet fully featured GNU Linux-based system that is highly portable. It can easily boot into a 64MB RAM disk, which means that the entire operating system essentially runs in RAM. Unlike most live CD distributions, that usually have to retrieve data from the CD, Puppy loads everything into RAM. This means that applications start in no time and respond immediately to user input.
Puppy Linux can also be bootable from various devices including flash cards, USB memory devices, CDROM, Zip disk, LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disks, and internal hard drives. Occupying approximately 50-60M of storage memory, Puppy Linux stores all uncompress files into a "ramdisk" that boots up when the software launches.
To have an optimal experience, it is recommended to use a PC with a minimum of 128M RAM. Puppy Linux will automatically use a swap partition if it exists during booting, and it will try to load all files into physical RAM while booting from a USB Flash device. If there is not enough RAM, Puppy will copy the excess to a swap partition, which drastically extends the lifespan of the flash memory.
