transset-df

Transset-df is a software tool that works as a patched version of Xorg's transset. As a user who wanted to integrate transset into my window manager, I needed a way to set and unset transparency instantly using a keypress. To solve this issue, I incorporated several "select methods," ranging from "select by pointing" to "select by name and id."

I was inspired by various other transset patches that had the same functionality, and I decided to add them to my version of the program. Currently, transparency settings are done through the window managers, but with future developments, we can expect more advanced features in transset-df.

The patch is a way of "scratching where it itches" by providing a useful integration with every window manager without altering any wm-code, the "Unix way" of doing it. Some of transset-df's key features include selecting windows by clicking, pointing, name or ID, force toggling, and increasing or decreasing opacity.

Installing transset-df is a straightforward process. For transparency to work in X, you must have an X-server with an XComposite extension working. Additionally, you must ensure that transset-df sets the necessary properties for the underlying X-server to support transparency.

To get started, type "tar zxf transset-df-X.tar.gz," where "X" represents the version number. Then, move to the directory by typing "cd transset-df-X/", followed by "make" and "make install," where you must be the root user.

One of the latest features added in the most recent release is a new option called "--actual," which sets transparency to the currently focused window. Overall, transset-df is an excellent software that empowers users to manage transparency on their windows effectively.
