Twilight Hack enables the execution of Linux on Nintendo Wii by acting as a chainloader.
The Twilight Hack is a chainloader that enables the running of Linux on the Nintendo Wii. For individuals interested in homebrew on their Wii, The Twilight Hack is the only released method considered safe. This hack leverages a lengthy character name for the horse in the game ('Epona') to enable a stack smash. The Smash occurs when the player talks to the man next to them on starting the savegame, and they load the name for use in their dialog. Alternatively, it may occur upon trying to enter the next zone before the man reminds them to go the other way to get the horse.
To use the Twilight Hack, users will need a Wii, two SD cards (one of which must have no files they wish to keep), a Non-Japanese copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess that has been run at least once, an SD Gecko for the GameCube, and a computer running Windows, Mac, Linux, or any other Unix-based OS. Additionally, users will need some way of reading SD cards on a computer, and at least one GameCube controller.
Users may encounter problems when using the product. For example, if your Wii has a USBGecko, you will need to unplug this before attempting to run the exploit. Additionally, there is a bug in the USBGecko code that will cause the game to hang if you have a USBGecko plugged into the Wii but not connected to any program on your computer. If the product repeatedly refuses to find your SD card, try taking your adapter apart, i.e., one side off, and inserting it with the cover leaning on it to get it to work correctly.
Note that the Twilight Hack does not work with every version of Zelda: TP. To check your version, compare the text string on the inner cycle of the data surface with the ones listed on the product's website. The RVL-RZDJ-0A-0 JPN version is not yet supported, but other versions appear to be working correctly. There have been a few minor problems reported, such as greeny lines around the top area of the screen that appear with the penguin and the bottom being cut off if the TV type is set to 480i/p (60Hz or EDTV mode).
