UDFclient is a powerful userland implementation of the UDF filing system, developed in accordance with the standards set by the OSTA group. It is a comprehensive platform enriched with an array of features designed to run a full read and write level implementation.

The software comes with a user interface that is much like ftp(1); however, it differs in that it fetches and writes files recursively from the discs. The latest version, 0.4.9, supports an extensive command set that includes basic features such as get, mget, put, mput, mv, rm, mkdir, cd, lcd, free, pwd, and lls. It also features the ability to retrieve or store files using different names from the original.

UDFclient supports various operating systems, including NetBSD, Linux, FreeBSD, and OpenBSD. It was mainly developed on NetBSD and runs smoothly on both little and big endian machines. It has been tested on NetBSD/alpha, NetBSD/acorn32 (arm), NetBSD/sparc, and NetBSD/pmax (mips). The software has been tested on ATAPI CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD+RW, as well as on SCSI CD-ROM and CD-RW. However, the latter might give problems as it hasn't been tested recently.

For Linux users, the software works perfectly on GNU/Linux and RedHat Linux versions. It supports both ATAPI and SCSI CD-ROMs when using /dev/sg* devices. Linux 2.6.x users should take note that ATAPI devices are read-only, mainly due to unresolved issues in the Linux ATAPI emulation block driver. However, there seems to be a new method under development that will be implemented soon. Feedback in this regard could be quite helpful.

Notably, version 0.3.2 onwards, support for ATAPI/SCSI through FreeBSD's CAM interface has been added to the software. However, to use the software to access ATAPI CD/DVD drives through CAM, users need to have a relatively recent FreeBSD operating system.

Lastly, OpenBSD users have access to ATAPI/SCSI support through the OpenBSD SCSI/ATAPI stack, which is remarkably similar to NetBSD's stack, albeit with small issues. Thanks to Pedro Martelletto for the patch!
