Ukopp

November 13, 2009
Ukopp is a cost-free Linux tool that can back up or copy disk files to a USB stick with ease.
Version 3.5.3
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage kornelix.squarespace.com
Developed by kornelix
Ukopp is a top-notch Linux program to backup and copy disk files to a USB stick. It is a free program and copies only those files that have been modified since the last backup. As a result, the program is quite fast. To make things even easier, Ukopp has a user-friendly GUI that lets you navigate through the file system and include or exclude files/directories at any level.

Backup jobs can be saved and reused later. It's worth mentioning that adding/deleting files is handled automatically, and the backup job does not require editing unless new directories or exceptions are added. The software allows selective restoration of files using the GUI. Additionally, Ukopp can restore ownership and permissions even if the USB stick uses a FAT file system.

Ukopp is licensed under the GNU General Public License and specially tailored for USB sticks/thumb drives. However, it can work with any medium that supports disk functionality (e.g., Linux file system such as ext2 or FAT). Backups can be stored in any ordinary directory. For DVD media, users can use the sister program, dkop.

The program offers two kinds of backups: incremental and accumulate. The former copies all disk files specified in the backup job to the USB stick, excluding those already present and unchanged. Furthermore, Ukopp deletes files on the USB stick that have no corresponding disk file. The latter is like an incremental backup but doesn't delete unmatched files.

Ukopp offers three ways of verifying USB stick media: full, incremental, and thorough. A full verify reads the entire USB stick and reports any read errors. The incremental verify only reads newly recorded files, while the thorough verify reads every file bytewise comparison with the corresponding disk file.

The program allows users to report all files in a backup job or all files on a USB stick medium. Users can also search for files using wildcards and compare a USB stick with a backup job to list all modified, deleted, or created files.

Lastly, for disaster recovery or file transfer, Ukopp has a file restore capability that lets you restore USB stick files to their original directories or anywhere else. It can also restore ownership and permissions, even if the USB stick uses a FAT file system.

Ukopp's speed depends on the updated files' size, with incremental backups or verifies taking only a few seconds if updated files are less than a few megabytes. However, the USB stick I/O speed determines the time required for larger file sizes. Users can access the source code and a binary executable that may work out of the box, in addition to a comprehensive user guide.
