Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar

Ultima IV is a remarkable RPG as it deviates from the typical storyline that features a player fighting an ultimate evil. In the previous three iterations, the triad of evil was defeated, which ended up drastically changing Sosaria's geography, causing new cities to be built, continents to sink and rise, and almost three-quarters of the world disappeared. Later, Sosaria was unified under Lord British's rule, and it was renamed as Britannia.

Lord British believed that the people were not happy and wanted to ensure their spiritual well-being. As a result, he initiated the Quest of the Avatar, searching for someone to serve as a role model goal to achieve. The objective of the game is for the main character to focus on virtue and serve as a spiritual leader to the people of Britannia.

The game revolves around the protagonist's quest to understand and exercise the Eight Virtues. After proving their understanding in each of the virtues, the hero endeavors to locate several artifacts and finally descends into the Stygian Abyss to gain access to the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom, which aids in becoming an Avatar. While Avatarhood is not restricted to one individual, the hero is the only known Avatar in the later games and gradually becomes legendary.
