URandR is a PyGTK written GUI (graphical user interface) to RandR 1.2 which aims to simplify the multihead configuration process for new users. By covering RandR 1.2 basic functionalities, it offers an easy solution for individuals that require multiple screens. This software is perfect for James who wants to connect his laptop to a projector without altering his xorg.conf file or for Jane who wants to work on two displays and desires to view them as a unified desktop.
Although URandR is highly advantageous for multi-display configurations, it can only set up two screens at a time. Nonetheless, this slight issue will be resolved with future releases. Currently, there are certain known issues with URandR. For instance, users who allow the software to set up a virtual resolution must enable their external monitor by checking the enable checkbox and clicking on the Apply button. Only then can the users set their external monitor to the left, right or other location of their primary screen. Additionally, setting the virtual resolution may disable direct rendering, which can be easily resolved by removing the virtual resolution from the xorg.conf file or with the designation of the Clear button. It is important to disable Compiz if an alternative resolution adjustment method is used.
In order to use URandR, users require Python, PyGTK, and an Intel card with Intel's modesetting driver or an ATI card with the open source driver ("ati") version 6.7.191 or higher. Additionally, xorg-server 1.3 or higher is also required, a condition that can be met with any GNU/Linux distribution.
