usocksd

The usocksd project is a SOCKS5 daemon that operates in user-mode. Unlike the typical socksd service that runs as a system service on a firewall machine, this daemon is designed for users to run themselves. There are two key scenarios in which usocksd is useful. The first situation involves a user who needs access to a machine with less restricted connectivity than the one they work on. The second scenario is where a user is on an insecure network and wants all network traffic to be encrypted using "ssh". In this instance, the user can access a machine that runs "sshd" on a more secure network, and usocksd contains particular provisions to support this use case.

For more information on how to run usocksd, check out the man page. To install the program, simply type sh ./configure; make; make install. The configure command accepts additional arguments, including --enable-debug, --enable-norelax, and --with-socks5, with configure --help providing further details.

It's worth noting that this program can use SOCKS on its own. However, we haven't tested this feature. Finally, it's worth noting that the program was developed on Linux 2.0 and has also been successfully tested on HPUX 10, AIX 4.1, and Solaris 2.6.
