Video-entropyd is a valuable software that boosts entropy in the kernel random driver by adding entropy data from video4linux devices. In order to ensure top-notch security, especially when generating secure keys or dealing with network traffic, it is critical to have an adequate amount of entropy data in the kernel random driver. While the random driver does provide some level of care in this regard, there are times when it cannot collect enough entropy data on its own given the high demand.

That's where video-entropyd comes in. Its primary purpose is to add entropy data to the kernel driver by sourcing two images from a video4linux device, which are separated by a random delay. The program then performs calculations to determine the difference between the two images, and the number of information bits contained in that data. With this information, the program submits the data with the number-of-entropy-bits to the kernel-random-driver.

When the program is run from crontab, it exits automatically after the process is complete. Alternatively, it can sleep for a random amount of time before repeating the same process again.
