w9wm

w9wm is a remarkable window manager emulation that has been improved further from the already outstanding 9wm, with added support for virtual screens and keybindings. It is a perfect tool for daily use, provided that you do not have a lot of windows on your screen. However, in some complicated situations, such as working on multiple remote machines through telnet, 9wm could become quite troublesome. To address this issue, w9wm was created as a hack that spans around 50 lines and aims to provide support for virtual screens with the use of the middle button, along with keybindings that allow easy switching between windows.

Installation of w9wm is a quick and straightforward process, assuming your system is properly configured. All you need to do is run xmkmf, which will generate the Makefile, then execute make or make install. Running make install.man will copy the manpage or 9wm.man to the correct directory. If you encounter a problem where make fails, citing the non-existence of the function _XShapeQueryExtension, removing the "-DSHAPE" from the Imakefile and rerunning xmkmf and make should fix the issue.

For those without imake or those who choose not to use it, simply copy the file "Makefile.no-imake" to "Makefile", then edit the definitions to suit your system. This may require defining suitable compilation flags for your system, which imake typically does for you. For instance, on AIX, the inclusion of "-DBSD_INCLUDES" in CFLAGS is a must. Overall, w9wm is an innovative and practical solution for all your window managing needs.
