The WBS Application is a webshots.com client that downloads and creates a background list for use with Xfce and Windowmaker. The installation process is simple - extract the file ( tar zxvf wbs.tar.gz ) and you will get a folder named .wbs. Create a folder for images ( mkdir .wbs/images ) and change the exec flag on the WBS file ( chmod +x .wbs/wbs ). However, note that this step is not necessary if you call this script as a perl argument. You can see the crontab info below for more details.

To do the processing, add an entry to crontab ( crontab -e ) and add this line: 15 10 * * * /homedir/.wbs/wbs or @reboot /homedir/.wbs/wbs. Replace "homedir" with the full path to the .wbs folder (you can use pwd to find out). For changing the background randomly, add this line: for Xfce: 0,30 * * * * export DISPLAY=:0; /path/xfdesktop -reload or @hourly export DISPLAY=:0; /path/xfdesktop -reload. Replace "path" with the full path to the xfdesktop file (you can use "which xfdesktop" to find out). For Windowmaker, add this line: 0,30 * * * * /homedir/.wbs/wmaker-reload or @hourly /homedir/.wbs/wmaker-reload. Replace "homedir" with the full path to the .wbs folder (again, you can use pwd to find out).

To use the WBS Application, download webdec and compile it. Place it in some folder and read the documentation for more information. Edit WBS and change variables to reflect your setup. Variables to change include: $user, $password, $path, $webdec, $images, and $list. $user is your user name for webshots.com (free). $password is your password for webshots.com. $path should use homedir and .wbs from step 5. $webdec is the full path to webdec binary. $images is the path for the images directory created in step 3. $list is the file where images list is saved. Run ./wbs/wbs or perl .wbs/wbs to check if the application works. Finally, update Xfce desktop settings to use the new images list.

In the latest release, the script has been updated to the new webshots.com layout.
