Winki the Ripper

September 10, 2007
Winki The Ripper is a user-friendly software that aims to simplify the video encoding process. It strives to provide the simplest and effortless way of encoding videos.
Version 0.4.5
License GPL v3
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage www.winki-the-ripper.de
Developed by Velko Hristov
Winki The Ripper is a video encoding program that prides itself on being easy to use. This software acts as a graphical frontend for GNOME written using Python and command line tools such as mencoder, oggenc, mkvtoolnix, mplayer and lsdvd. It's important to note that some of the tools required by Winki The Ripper may not be legal in certain countries. So, it's advised that you verify their legality in your country before proceeding.

While we highly recommend that you avoid using illegal tools altogether, it's also not our responsibility to determine which tools might be restricted in your location. Some key features of Winki The Ripper are its support for input formats such as DVD, VCD/SVCD, and multimedia files. However, it should be noted that the multimedia function doesn't work very well at present. Outputs include VCD/SVCD (limited to one video, one audio, and no subtitle streams), multimedia matroska or ogm files (limited to one video, three audio, and three subtitle streams), and multiple chunk outputs.

Other features include easy crop detection, preview settings before ripping, translations in Bulgarian, German, Polish, and Spanish, and predefined/custom size output chunks. The software has a few limitations, including the fact that it works only with English versions of mplayer, mencoder, and lsdvd, and it cannot use external audio or subtitle files. Users should also note that the program doesn't check HDD free space before encoding and doesn't support the GTK build-in support for those with disabilities.

To use Winki The Ripper, you must have specific dependencies such as Python interpreter (version 2.3 or higher), python-gtk, python-glade, python-distutils (debian), mencoder, mplayer, lsdvd, lame or oggenc (recommended), ogm tools or mkvtoolnix (recommended), dvb-mplex (if you want to create VCD/SVCD), vcdimager (if you want to create VCD/SVCD), and libdvdcss (if you want support for encrypted DVDs and the law in your country permits its usage).

This release comes with a few new features, namely lower CPU usage while encoding, corrected call to mplayer in vnc to prevent crashes, file name quoting using single quotes, an option for adding arguments to the mplayer command line in preview mode, and the ability to select the default output folder in the GUI.
