Wmifinfo is a straightforward application that displays essential network information for all interfaces that are accessible.
I recently tried out wmifinfo, a simple and effective applet that provides basic network information for all available interfaces. It displays essential details such as IP address, netmask, gateway, and MAC address. What is particularly useful about this software is that I can easily cycle through each interface by simply clicking the left button on my mouse.
In addition to this, I found the ability to call ifup/ifdown scripts with a right-click to be extremely handy. These scripts can be customized using the -u and -d options, with the '%s' variable being replaced by the relevant interface name. For example, using the command "$ wmifinfo -i ppp0 -u "/sbin/ifup %s" -d "/sbin/ifdown %s"" will execute ifup/ifdown scripts for the 'ppp0' interface.
It is worth noting that to use this feature, ifup/ifdown or the wmifinfo binaries need to have suid root privileges. Overall, my experience with wmifinfo has been great, and I did not come across any significant bugs during my testing.
Finally, I appreciated the intuitive use of LED colors to convey important interface states. For instance, when an interface is down, the LED turns red; a yellow LED indicates that the ifup/ifdown script is busy, and a dark green LED indicates that the interface is up, but there is no network traffic. In contrast, a light green LED indicates that the interface is up and either sending or receiving data.
