wmjiface

I recently tried out the software, wmjiface, and found it to be a straightforward, text-based network device status monitor. The program effectively displays a weighted average of traffic data from the past few seconds, taking into account overhead packets.

In order to successfully use the software, the Xpm library is required as a pre-requisite. As for installation, the process involved a few steps. Firstly, I had to extract the wmjiface tar file using the tar -zxf command. Then, I navigated to the src directory and edited the Makefile to include information about the prefix, owner, and group variables. This allowed me to specify where the program files would be placed and who would own them. Additionally, I had to uncomment the owner and group options in the Makefile if I wanted to use them.

Next, I ran the make install command to complete the installation process. However, there was an issue with the program's functioning on SunOS/Solaris. Apparently, the program uses /proc to gather net info, which may not be available on certain types of familiar Linux boxes. Therefore, I had to spend some time editing the program's ifacechk file to ensure that it worked properly.

Overall, I found that wmjiface was a decent software for monitoring network device statuses. While the installation process was somewhat customizable, there were some compatibility concerns that I had to address before the program functioned at its best.
