XBoard

XBoard is a graphical chessboard project that caters to both X and Windows operating systems. It has a wide range of capabilities that range from being a user interface for GNU Chess, Crafty, and other chess engines to serving as an interface for the Internet Chess Servers. Additionally, XBoard can also be used as a standalone platform to read and write game files in PGN format.

WinBoard is a version of XBoard specifically designed for Microsoft Win32. Building XBoard is easy as it can be done on most systems with just two simple commands: ./configure make.

The latest version (4.2.7) of XBoard and WinBoard offers numerous improvements over the older releases. It fixes around two dozen bugs in the 4.2.6 version and comes pre-bundled with GNU Chess 5.07 instead of the outdated 5.02+ version. Furthermore, the XBoard and WinBoard source code trees have been merged to provide a complete source for both tools in a single download.
