xconvers

Xconvers is a TCP/IP based service designed for Amateur radio operators that utilizes a command subset of IRC. It functions as a client for convers, an IRC-like conversation system for hamradio operators that distinguishes itself from IRC by having a much smaller command set, allowing for shorter command input and output. This is primarily to keep network traffic low, as many convers servers are linked by radio waves.

Convers is optimized to generate less traffic than IRC, as part of the convers server network is connected over a radio network with slow links that can only support a baud rate of 1200-9600. Convers uses port 3600 as its primary connection port.

Xconvers was initially a motif client for the wampes convers server, but the xconvers maintainer was looking for someone to take over the software. After maintaining the motif version for some time, the user interface has been rewritten to use GTK+ and features have been added to enhance functionality.

Some of the key features of xconvers include configurable color support for assigning different colors to every user, optional saving of the session to a logfile, history for the connect dialog and the send widget, autologin and automatic sending of commands, selectable font, color and pixmap for the main window, language support, and the ability to turn off the statusbar, scrollbar, and menu.
