Xfce 4 Xfapplet Plugin is a plugin designed for the Xfce 4 Panel enabling users to incorporate applets created for the Gnome Panel into the Xfce Panel. Essentially, XfApplet functions as a compact Gnome Panel that works within the Xfce Panel, displaying the same applets as the Gnome Panel.

The latest stable version of XfApplet Plugin boasts exceptional features such as supporting most Gnome applets. However, the Gnome Systray and Window List applets are not strongly supported in the current version, but the update should rectify this. moreover, the XfApplet properties dialog allows you to select any installed Gnome applet similar to the Gnome Panel.

In addition, the XfApplet context menu reflects both Xfce and Gnome Panel related items, contingent on the displayed applet. Further, XfApplet's display components matchup accurately, aligning themselves with the Xfce Panel settings, such as position, floating or anchored, and size.

The motivation behind creating XfApplet was due to Olivier Fourdan (Xfce project leader), who was asked whether the Gnome Panel applets could be integrated with the Xfce Panel. His response was that, at that time, Xfce Panel did not support standalone applets such as those on the Gnome Panel. However, instead, a plugin could be written for the Xfce Panel to adapt to Gnome applets. Besides, XfApplet offers software reusability linking to the Bonobo infrastructure and the Xfce Panel libraries. As a result, users do not have to write individual Gnome applets instead of working with Xfce libraries.

Since many Xfce users migrate from Gnome, XfApplet makes it easier for them to adapt, allowing Gnome applets to be used inside the Xfce Panel, making the transition between both desktop environments more comfortable.

When using XfApplet, the process is relatively simple. However, since XfApplet is purely intended to showcase Gnome applets, its functionality is uncomplicated. Hence, users have to refer to the distinctive documentation of the specific Gnome applet. After installing and correctly setting up XfApplet, users need to right-click the Xfce Panel and select "Add New Item." From the list of available plugins, the XfApplet Plugin can be found. Dragging and dropping XfApplet to Xfce Panel or clicking "Add" will display an empty XfApplet. Right-clicking the icon and selecting "Properties" opens the XfApplet properties dialog that lets users choose any installed Gnome applet. Each XfApplet instance can display only one Gnome applet. So if you want to show multiple applets, add XfApplet instances for each of them.
