Xmcd is a CD player and ripper software that offers comprehensive features to its users. It allows individuals to manage and rip CDs with ease.

Developed by Ti Kan
Xmcd is a comprehensive CD Player and Ripper software package that comes with two utilities: xmcd and cda. The former is a user interface for the X window system using the Motif graphical user interface, while the latter is a shell command-line utility that features a curses-based screen-oriented mode. These programs allow users to turn their computer's CD or DVD drive into a stereo CD player, enabling them to play music CDs on their computer. In addition, they can also function as a CD Ripper, letting you extract full-quality digital audio data from your CDs and play them in real-time. You can also save them to files or pipe them to other utilities for processing.

Xmcd supports a variety of file formats, including WAV, AU, AIFF, MP3, AAC, MP4, Ogg Vorbis and FLAC. It is designed to be an intuitive and feature-rich system that takes advantage of many CD drive capabilities that are not accessible via other software. Unlike other general media players that try to do it all, xmcd focuses on the CD and aims to be the best with this medium.

One of the notable features of Xmcd is its CD recognition via Gracenote CDDB. It can connect to the CDDB servers on the Internet to obtain information such as the artist, disc title, song titles, and other metadata about the CD being played. Xmcd is also compatible with many firewall proxy configurations for accessing the CDDB server, and it supports CD-TEXT on drives that have this functionality.

Another significant attribute of Xmcd is its "wwwWarp," which is a portal to the web browser that offers search and dynamic content capabilities based on the CD being played. "Local Discography" is also another sub-feature of wwwWarp, providing browser-based navigation and maintenance of users' CD collection, sound files, and other relevant data. Extras include feature-specific help and documentation systems, command-line control, remote control, and much more.

Xmcd offers the most comprehensive platform support of any CD player and ripper software. It works virtually on all Linux and UNIX OS flavors, as well as OpenVMS. It supports a vast spectrum of CD drive brand/models, including multi-disc CD changers and older SCSI-1 drives. Screenshots of xmcd in action are available. You can also read a rawmeat.org CD player review for UNIX and Linux, which covered xmcd version 2.4. Please note that there have been numerous significant enhancements to xmcd since this review was published.
