XMMS

XMMS is a multimedia player that is designed for Unix systems. It is called X MultiMedia System and is capable of playing various media files including MP3, MOD's, WAV, and others with the help of Input plugins. XMMS is primarily geared towards music playback although it does offer some basic video support through third-party plugins. However, it is important to note that there are other systems that are much better suited for video.

The XMMS player was developed from scratch by Mikael and Peter Alm, but its interface has been modeled after Winamp from the Windows operating system. The 'Audio I/O' tab is the heart of XMMS, as it controls the Input and Output plugins. In the 'Input plugins' section, you can configure and enable/disable the available plugins. The list box shows the name of the plugin, file name, and whether or not it is disabled. The 'Output Plugin' determines how XMMS should play the audio. You can only use one 'Output Plugin' at a time, which means you cannot listen to music through 'OSS Driver' while saving it to disk with 'Disk Writer'.

XMMS offers several features including the ability to read information from files in your playlist. You can choose to enable this feature either on-demand or when the file is added to your playlist. Other features include the ability to convert spaces to underscores, dim the titlebar when inactive, sort the 'Jump to File' dialog alphabetically, and use real-time priority when available.

Additionally, XMMS allows you to adjust the volume using your mouse wheel and save the window position on your screen. You can also enable the display of the internal track number in the playlist, use meta data in the playlists, and snap the window at a specified pixel range. XMMS even has an equalizer that doubles in size when you make XMMS doublesize. Overall, XMMS is a great application for music playback but it does have its limitations with video.
