Xstatuspanel

November 6, 2007
Xstatuspanel is an X11 application for Linux that offers a consolidated system status monitoring experience through a collection of monitors.

Developed by Rob McMullen
If you're a Linux user looking for a system-monitoring application, Xstatuspanel is worth considering. It's a powerful tool that bundles together multiple status monitors in a single X11 application. Although it's similar to gkrellm, it has a different goal: to be a lightweight, memory-efficient process.

The Xstatuspanel window is divided into several sub-windows that display important information about your computer's performance. From date and clock to network packet traffic usage and sound card mixer level controls, there's plenty of data to explore. For instance, the Instantaneous CPU Load displays individual graphs for each processor in multiprocessor machines. Moreover, an APM power meter indicates how much power your computer is using.

A customizable configuration file allows you to customize the order of panels, making the application more user-friendly. One new feature in this release is the addition of Mail and UnixMail. Additionally, the Selector class has been integrated with the TimeManager, allowing users to find out when data is waiting on some file descriptor. This is used to avoid the need for new threads to wait for info to come back from an IMAP socket.

Other updates include the addition of ImapMail, a fix for calendar display of the 2nd month, and support for temperature from the /proc filesystem. However, this last feature is still undocumented and a quick hack according to the developers. They plan to replace it with a more generic mechanism in the near future. Finally, documentation has been updated, and configuration issues have been resolved.

Overall, Xstatuspanel is a useful application that can help any Linux user keep an eye on their system's performance. The customization tools and the ability to monitor several system parameters make it worthy of consideration for those seeking an efficient and informative monitoring solution.
