This software reduces the CPU clock and voltage for both Intel and AMD processors.
The software is engineered to work on most standard laptops, including those manufactured by Apple, and provides a stellar example of how to query ACPI in MacOS X (which is virtually undocumented). It can also be handy in fixing the "Apple Whine" issue that is common in Apple hardware.
It's essential to install the debug version of this software first as it prints debug information to the system log, and, in case of any issues, it will provide info on why it doesn't work. The Readme file included in the package includes instructions on how to install it.
However, the ACPICPUThrottle driver WILL NOT WORK on newer versions of Apple MacOS X. It's known to work on v8.4.1 kernels (Tiger 10.4.4) only. This is because newer kernels, such as 8.6.1, no longer provide the rtc_clock_stepping() call required to resynchronize clocks. If you have any knowledge in newer kernel implementations or can patch support yourself, the team would appreciate your contribution.
Finally, it's important to note that the ACPICPUThrottle driver DOES NOT WORK ON ALL LAPTOP HARDWARE. If your BIOS is brain dead and does not report possible power states for your CPU or reports only two power states, and one of those is below 1Ghz, the driver will refuse to load. So, don't report it as a bug since the team cannot fix something that is out of their control.
