Aero Fighters is a classic arcade shoot 'em up game that was released in 1992 by Video System. It can be played on the Super Famicom and Super Nintendo systems. The game is also known as Sonic Wings in Japan and has a vertical-scrolling format.
The game offers the player a choice of four nationalities - USA, Japan, England, or Sweden - and takes them through seven stages that are full of enemy fire. Dodging and weaving through the dangers, the player fights their way towards the colossal end boss of each stage. Player 1 is required to select from the Player 1 Side fighters, which include F / A-18, FS-X, AV-8B, and AJ-37. If a second player joins, they must select the second fighter for player 1's nation - F-14, F-15, JAS 39 Gripen, or Tornado IDS. However, the nationality restriction is removed in Aero Fighters 2.
The first sequel of Aero Fighters was known for its multiple instances of Engrish, including the famous phrase, "I never thought I'd be frying over a jungle." Interestingly, most of the creative team behind Aero Fighters went on to create other shmups for Psikyo, such as Strikers 1945.
The Super NES port of Aero Fighters was handled by Video System's U.S. affiliate, McO'River. It was released on November 30th, 1994, but only in limited quantities, making it one of the rarest Super NES cartridges available today.
