Aimwatch is a packet sniffer software that is specialized in retrieving and organizing AOL Instant Messenger and ICQ data.
This software has the capability to read packets live from the network or from a file saved in libpcap/tcpdump format. However, to collect packets from connections between remote machines, you'll need to have some technical knowledge or use separate tools to redirect packets through your machine.
Aimwatch currently requires a Linux operating system with the libpcap, libxml2, and GTK+ 2 libraries installed. However, the developer may make a binary available in the future, and a Windows port could also be created down the line. A text-only interface is expected to be added to Aimwatch later.
One of the standout features of Aimwatch is its dynamic tree structure, which is created in memory using an XML file to describe the protocol. This allows for easy additions to the program without the need to recompile it or understand its source code.
If you're interested in using Aimwatch, you'll need to have the GTK+2 libraries, libpcap library, and libxml2 (for aimwatch 0.9 and later) installed. The latest version includes several bug fixes, added dissections to the OSCAR protocol data, and nick coloring. The program is mostly functional at this point, and the "Clear" feature has also been fixed.
