This software features a reliable eigensolver and a contemporary build system.
One of the biggest changes with ARPACK with Autotools is the replacement of the build system with autoconf/automake. This modernises the build process and makes it far easier to build ARPACK on a variety of different machines. Now, simply using the regular "./configure make make install" command will suffice.
Developer comments also note that while ARPACK with Autotools is a modified version of the original program, it's still incredibly useful. Over time, ARPACK's build system started to feel quite old-fashioned, causing problems. That's why the developer decided to take matters into their own hands and modernise it.
In addition to the improved build system, ARPACK with Autotools also makes it easy to build a shared library of ARPACK. As there isn't a proper version numbering system in place for ARPACK on the original site, the developer has elected to start the versioning system at 0.90. Overall, ARPACK with Autotools is a welcome addition to the sparse eigensolver library.
