AVFS is a program that allows easy access to the contents of files inside compressed archives like gzip, tar, zip, etc. for all software applications.
There are two installation methods: Avfscoda and Preload. The former works on any Linux system with the "coda" filesystem compiled into the kernel or as a kernel module, while the latter currently only works on Solaris systems.
Using AVFS is similar in both cases, with the main difference being the installation method. For installation instructions, refer to the files "INSTALL.preload" and "INSTALL.avfscoda."
The latest release of AVFS includes several fixes and updates, such as support for long names in POSIX ustar archives, the ability to output correct symlinks and support http/ssh in ftplist, checks for additional base avfs directories in ftppass/davpass, and support for @ in usernames in the ftp module. Additionally, the avfs library is now built and installed by default, and an RPM spec file has been added for avfs-fuse.
