Bare Knuckle 3, also known as Streets of Rage 3 in the US, is the third installment of Sega's popular beat 'em up franchise. It was a hit among gamers, with its release in America under the title Streets of Rage 3.
Fortunately, the goal of this project is two-fold. Firstly, to rectify Sega's shortcomings and create a faithful translation to the source material without removing anything from the plot. Secondly, to gain experience with the Sega Genesis system. This is my first venture into Sega hacking, and it has proven to be more challenging than I anticipated.
The project's early stages involved planning for a simple 16x16 to 8x16 font hack, but I later abandoned this idea in favor of a VWF (Variable Width Font) hack. This hack required tools that did not previously exist, and it has taken longer than expected to develop them. Days turned into weeks, weeks into months, and finally, more than a year later, the necessary tools are available.
Overall, Streets of Rage 3 is an insanely difficult game that is perfect for players who enjoy a challenge. However, the altered plot does it no favors. This project aims to restore the original story and provide a quality translation that preserves the game's essence. It is an exciting venture for anyone interested in Sega hacking.
