GNOME is a worldwide initiative that aims to develop a comprehensive desktop environment using only open-source software. This objective includes developing software development frameworks, choosing application software for the desktop, and scripting the programs that manage application launching, file handling, and window and task management.
GNOME is part of the GNU Project and operates with different Unix-like operating systems, with Linux being the most well-known, and as part of Java Desktop System in Solaris. The original name, GNU Network Object Model Environment, is no longer in use.
The GNOME project prioritizes simplicity, usability, and making things "just work."
