GNOME is an international effort to build a complete desktop environment with a graphical user interface that sits on top of an operating system using open-source software. It's part of the GNU Project and can be used with various Unix-like operating systems, with Linux being one of the most notable. The project's main focus is simplicity, usability, and making things work smoothly. The name originally stood for GNU Network Object Model Environment, although this acronym is deprecated.
