Cfingerd is a customizable finger server application.
One particularly useful feature is the ability to enable/disable finger service to individual users, as opposed to all users on a given host. This allows for greater control and flexibility. Additionally, Cfingerd is able to respond to a finger request to a specified user by running a shell script. For example, a finger request sent to "[email protected]" might cause a sound file to be sent, rather than just a plain text file.
Other key features of Cfingerd include its highly configurable nature, distinction between local (trusted) and remote hosts, and the ability to parse user files for variables and commands. Users can also be hidden, and the passwd file can be searched for specific strings.
Cfingerd supports fake users and has robust support for banner/footer, as well as freely configurable response strings. It is also possible to log finger actions in user's logfiles and reject hosts according to the config file.
In a recent release, Cfingerd received a security update that fixed buffer overflows introduced with sscanf(), which had the potential to be exploited under FreeBSD. Overall, Cfingerd is a powerful and flexible solution that will meet the needs of users looking for a secure finger daemon replacement.
