DBA Companion is a freely available Oracle administration software that enables advanced database management.
The configuration process for DBA Companion is straightforward. Simply set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH (SHLIB_PATH on HP) to point to the $ORACLE_HOME/lib and QT library directory, and set the DBACOMP_INI to the dbacomp.ini file with the full path. Once that's done, open dbacomp.ini and set the 'sql_cache_file', 'sql_generation', and 'user_sql' variables.
The 'sql_cache_file_prefix' tells DBA Companion where to find the SQL statements files, which contain all the SQL that DBA Companion uses. The 'sql_generation' variable specifies the directory where DBA Companion should store SQL scripts that you may generate with the tool. The 'user_sql' variable indicates the location of the file that contains a user's own SQL statements. It is important to note that 'sql_cache_file_prefix' and 'user_sql' must be set to the fully qualified file name.
By default, the files are called user.sql and dbacomp. However, if you don't set any of these variables, DBA Companion will look for these files in the local directory where you started the tool from using the default names. Once you have completed the configuration, start DBA Companion by typing './dbacomp' and log in to enjoy its features.
It's important to note that you can start DBA Companion with the username/password[@tnsalias] on the command line or start OPS$ (automatic) logons. This release also adds some new features, such as charting capabilities, the ability to integrate with Statspack and AWR analysis modules, and the adaptation to Oracle 10G. Plus, it corrects a number of issues from the previous version. Overall, DBA Companion is an excellent tool for any Oracle database administrator looking to manage their databases better.
