DeFX plug-in enhances XMMS audio capabilities, offering a range of effects for audio processing. As a multi-effects processor, it adds a unique twist to audio playback.
DeFX belongs to the effect plugin category, which helps you alter the sound that XMMS has processed before sending it to your sound card. Therefore, DeFX sits between XMMS and your sound card. The software supports six types of effects that are grouped into four different modules, namely, Karaoke, Panning, Modulation, and Reverberation. These modules offer various effects, including removing song voices, smoothly selecting between the two stereo channels, classical effects (flange, phaser, and chorus), and simulating your songs' environment.
To use DeFX, you need to fulfill a few requirements. Firstly, you must have XMMS installed on your Linux-based computer. Secondly, you need to compile the DeFX module by yourself, for which you require some basic development packages, such as GTK+ and XMMS. To execute the plugin, you need the runtime packages. However, to compile the source code, you require additional development packages. The compilation process is straightforward; you need to run the make command.
Installing DeFX is also simple. You need to copy the DeFX file to your XMMS effect plugins directory. The directory is typically in /usr/lib/xmms/Effect. The installation process can be automated by running the make install command as root.
Activating DeFX in XMMS is also easy. Once you have launched XMMS, the DeFX control panel appears. However, it will not be activated until you enable it in the XMMS preferences window. You can access the preferences window by pressing Ctrl-P. From the Effect Plugins section, activate DeFX, and you are good to go.
