DesktopID allows users to view essential machine information on their desktop, simplifying their system monitoring process. This software enables users to keep track of their CPU usage, memory usage, and other key information necessary to optimize their computer's performance.
The software offers a wide range of machine information that it can display, including computer name, OS version, user name, ID, group membership, classic running or not, network interface, location, IP address, netmask, default gateway, DNS server, domain, broadcast address, MAC address, machine, CPU, serial number (10.3 only), RAM, uptime, load average, Apple Remote Desktop (if installed), information fields 1-4, and custom shell commands.
DesktopID is fully configurable, although there is no GUI admin tool available at this time. Users can check out the comprehensive documentation on how to modify the settings to suit their preferences.
The latest version of DesktopID (v1.86) introduces a new mechanism for detecting the primary active hardware network interface. In previous versions, DesktopID only displayed information for Built-in Ethernet (en0). However, Version 1.86 now has the ability to swap between interfaces as they become active, ensuring that users with laptops who connect in different ways at different locations can seamlessly access critical machine data.
It's important to note that this new feature only works under 10.4. Users of older revisions of the OS will be restricted to displaying data from en0. In summary, DesktopID is a must-have software for Mac users who require quick and easy access to machine information without having to navigate through multiple menus or third-party applications.
