Dictconv software converts dictionary files from one format to another in a quick and simple way. It eliminates the need for manual data transfer resulting in efficient and streamlined conversion.
The program is lightweight, and it is suitable for anyone who needs to convert dictionary files without compromising on the quality of the output. Here is how you can install it:
$ ./configure --help
$ ./configure [options]
$ make all install
The usage of the program is easy to understand. Once you have installed it, simply input the command below to convert a dictionary file:
$ dictconv original_file.ext target_file.ext
Dictconv accurately detects the type of dictionary by its extension. Some of the supported file types are .bgl for Babylon glossaries, .ifo for StarDict dictionaries, .dct for Sdictionary dictionaries, and .tei for Freedict dictionaries (XML format).
Currently, Dictconv supports conversion from Babylon glossaries, Sdictionary dictionaries, and Freedict dictionaries to StarDict dictionaries. More file types will be added in the future. One drawback is that when converting to StarDict, the .dict file is not compressed. However, in the future, Dictconv will add a feature that allows users to compress the file using the dictzip program:
$ dictzip target_file.dict
It is worth noting that Dictconv is at an early stage of development; therefore, users may encounter bugs. However, if you find any, the program has a report feature that you can use to submit them.
Finally, the latest release of Dictconv includes several bug fixes, mainly in the Babylon glossary reader. Additionally, Dictconv now supports CMake, and users can convert to plain text dictionaries and to DICT dictionaries with this program.
