Dirac is a versatile video codec with compression and decompression features for various video formats.
The traditional hybrid video codec architecture of Dirac is unique- it uses a wavelet transform instead of the usual block transforms. Moreover, motion compensation is implemented using overlapped blocks to decrease block artifacts that could disrupt the transform coding phase. Importantly, Dirac has the capacity to compress video of different sizes, from streaming up to HD quality and beyond.
The encoder can set certain parameters for different applications and standards, such as block sizes and temporal prediction structures, which would otherwise need to be set manually. Dirac aims to become a complete coding and decoding software that can integrate with video processing applications and operate within media players. As such, it is designed to be a simple and reliable range of coding tools for diverse content and formats, utilizing well-established compression techniques within an accessible software structure.
Lastly, it is critical to note that Dirac is not intended as a demonstration or reference coder.
