Scientists (and grad students) often need to manage a large body of peer-reviewed literature. Many peer-reviewed documents available online today have been assigned Digital Object Identifier numbers.
Journals also commonly print the DOIs of works cited in the paper in the references section. The DOI creates a permanent link to the document.
This is useful because even if the location of the document you're interested in changes, the DOI will remain the same and allow the document to be located on the Internet.
As you're reading a paper, you may decide you want to read one of the works that the paper references. If the the DOI of the referenced work is printed in the references section you can quickly access the document by typing (or copying and pasting if you're reading from a digital copy) the DOI into the DOI Resolver Widget and hit Enter. The widget will then take your default web browser to the page associated with the DOI.
