DROID identifies digital records.
DROID uses both internal and external signatures to identify and report on specific file format versions. These signatures are stored in an XML signature file that is generated from the technical registry of PRONOM. To ensure that DROID stays up-to-date with new format signatures, it is configured to automatically download them from the PRONOM website via web services.
This platform-independent Java application includes a documented, public API that makes it easy to integrate with other systems. DROID can be used through two interfaces: a Java Swing GUI and a command line interface. Even large folders or files can be easily selected for identification and the file list can be saved at any point.
In addition, DROID can also identify URIs and streams via the command line interface. Once the identification process has been run, users can output the results in XML, CSV, or printer-friendly formats. Overall, DROID is an efficient and valuable tool for any digital repository looking to identify and preserve digital objects.
