This software utilizes official budget information to compute the total amount of public funds expended starting from January 1st.
This widget displays the monetary cost of the drug war using the two most authoritative sources available. It showcases the amount of money that the government has spent since the beginning of the year in combating the drug menace. However, it is unable to determine the societal costs of the government's actions under the guise of war. These actions have led to adverse consequences such as making the United States the nation that incarcerates the highest percentage of its population amongst other countries globally.
Operating on budget data for the year 2006, the widget ticks over $1,620.37 every second in a day as a reminder of the amount of taxpayer funds wasted on the war on drugs. It is disheartening to note that this war has only resulted in an increase in the availability of drugs among children, drug-related violence, and violation of our rights.
The back side of the widget features a scrollable window with information on the data sources used in the calculations. The widget expands when flipped over, making it easier to read the details and returns to normal size when flipped back to the front.
At Action America, we are dedicated to accuracy and only use conservative data that we can stand behind. Whenever there is a slight discrepancy between two equally authoritative sources, as often happens, we always use the lower number. We want you to know where the numbers come from so that you can form an opinion on how dire the situation really is.
The Drug War Cost Clock widget will automatically reset every January, but it will not update new budget numbers that climb higher yearly. New versions will be available in the coming months that include updates to the Drug War's changing budget numbers from a file on our website. Installing this widget on your Mac will provide a clear visual reminder of just how wasteful the government's War on Drugs is.
