DuMP3 is a Java-based software that helps in finding duplicate or similar files. It is derived from the term Duplicate MP3, and its primary function is to identify any duplicate audio file within the system.
What sets DuMP3 apart from other similar software is that it doesn't rely on comparing filenames or ID3 tags; it only works based on fingerprint calculations. However, the program does have options for custom plugin classes to perform these other functions.
DuMP3 even has a feature to mark files that cannot be properly read or decoded, making it easy to spot any potential issues. The fingerprint calculations can also be stored in a MySQL database so that they don't have to be recalculated each time.
This program is highly versatile, able to find similar files that are not exact duplicates. It can compare binary files based on SHA1 hash, detect text files that have been changed due to addition or deletion with two fingerprint algorithm options, find pictures in different formats, sizes and/or rotations, work with audio files that have been saved at different bit rates or formats, and more.
DuMP3 has few limitations beyond what's inherent in Java and the chosen libraries, but it does require a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) - tested with JRE6.
Updates to this program include improved button functionality, the addition of a stop button, better mechanisms to stop threads, and a new icon. Overall, DuMP3 is a fantastic tool to save time and effort when searching for duplicate or similar files.
