DVDauthor provides an easy-to-use toolkit for DVD authoring. With its tools, you can create a DVD disc by adding your own video, audio, and other multimedia files, as well as menus and chapters.
Using dvdauthor is easy. To get started, you'll need mpeg files containing the necessary DVD VOB packets. These can be generated by passing '-f 8' to mplex, using the included utility makevob. There are three simple steps to building the DVD directory structure on your HDD.
First, you need to delete a previously authored dvd using dvddirdel [-o dir]. Note that this will delete everything in the directory you specify. Be careful!
Next, create your titlesets using dvdauthor [-o dir] [audio/video/subpicture options] [chapters]. If you want to create one chapter per mpeg, simply use dvdauthor [-o dir] [a/v/s options] chap1.mpg chap2.mpg chap3.mpg....If you want to manually specify chapters, use the '--chapters' option with dvdauthor [-o dir] [a/v/s options] -c chap1a.mpg chap1b.mpg -c chap2a.mpg chap2b.mpg ....
Lastly, create the table of contents using dvdauthor -T [-o dir]. And voila! You now have a DVD directory structure that will probably work! You can write this to your DVD, mini-DVD (CD), or play it from your HDD.
You'll be happy to know that dvdauthor can autodetect most parameters except the language, which is a great time-saver. Note that all audio, video, and subpicture options must be set once for the entire titleset, according to the DVD standard. You can't mix PAL and NTSC video in the same titleset. You'll have to generate separate titlesets for that.
In terms of updates, the latest release has added support of VOBUs without audio or video. There is also reading from file descriptors for VOBs, palette and XML, support for long subtitles and for full sized PTS/SCR. The audio type detection logic has been improved, and many minor bugs have been fixed and features added.
Overall, dvdauthor is a great tool for DVD authoring. It is easy to use, informative and regularly updated. So why not give it a try and see how it can improve your DVD authoring experience?
