Eicq is an ICQ client coded in Emacs Lisp, allowing users to access ICQ messaging services seamlessly.
With Eicq, users can easily send and receive messages, as well as URL type messages. The client also allows users to query ICQ users' meta info, search for ICQ users, and dynamically add new users to their contact list. Additionally, users can customize their experience by playing sounds for different events and setting auto online and auto response messages.
Eicq offers a range of features specifically designed for SXEmacs and XEmacs users, including Gnus style smileys and text emphasis, clickable hyperlinks for URL's, email addresses, and Unix manual page titles, and mICQ style per contact history logs. The client also works seamlessly in both a GUI environment and on a console/TTY.
Other notable features of Eicq include a dockable frame that tracks the number of unread messages and interactive customization through XEmacs Custom widgets. Users can also create key bindings and "script" in elisp. For those who love to psycho-analyze their friends, the client even offers an "Eliza meets Eicq" function that allows contacts to psycho-analyze themselves.
While Eicq cannot yet transfer files or chat, the client remains an excellent choice for those looking for a reliable ICQ client for SXEmacs and XEmacs. This is due to a limitation of (S)XEmacs itself, as it does not yet support server sockets. However, Eicq remains a popular choice among users who require customizable, powerful ICQ functionality.
