ExodusII is software designed to save and retrieve limited element topology and geometry.
One notable aspect of ExodusII is its reliance on netcdf as its base. Consequently, the netcdf library must be modified slightly to accommodate the exodusII datamodel. Specifically, some defined variables must be increased as follows: #define NC_MAX_DIMS 65536 (max dimensions per file), #define NC_MAX_VARS 524288 (max variables per file), and #define NC_MAX_VAR_DIMS 8 (max per variable dimensions).
To accommodate the increased sizes, the 'dims' and 'vdims' arrays are malloc'd instead of using static arrays that fail with increased sizes. Once the needed modifications have been made, users may have to do "unlimit stacksize" when running the netcdf tests to avoid some failures resulting from the increased defined sizes.
There have been numerous major bugfixes and code cleanups since the previous release, making this the most stable and efficient version of ExodusII yet.
In summary, if you're looking for a reliable software that can handle large datasets used in finite element analyses for preprocessing, postprocessing, and code to code data transfer, you should try out ExodusII. Just bear in mind that you will need to modify your netcdf library slightly to accommodate its datamodel.
