FileBunker is a backup software that utilizes Gmail accounts as backup storage.
Before we can start using FileBunker to backup our files, we need to configure the application. The configuration process involves choosing 'Configuration' from the File menu. Here, we need to input some crucial information to complete the configuration process.
Foremost, FileBunker requires us to establish a password for encrypting the backup data. We must note that longer passwords are better and should not coincide with the password to any of the GMail accounts we are using for backups. We must type the password again in the 'Confirm Password' field to ensure it's recorded correctly.
FileBunker transfers files to GMail by sending them via the standard email transfer protocol SMTP. We must specify an SMTP server that will send our email, which is usually an address like smtp.mycompany.com or mail.myisp.com. If we're unsure what to input, we can check the account configuration in our email application (such as Outlook or Eudora), or contact our ISP for guidance. Some SMTP servers require authentication, which involves specifying a username and password for authenticity. If our server requires authentication, we should check the 'Requires Authentication' checkbox, click the 'Configure' button to specify the username and password. Again, we need to confirm the password to ensure it's recorded correctly.
Finally, to perform any backups, we need to specify one or more GMail accounts to which our files will be sent. We can prompt FileBunker to add a new account by clicking the 'New' button and specifying the email address and password for an existing GMail account. The '@gmail.com' is already specified, so we only need to input the user name. After pressing OK, we will return to the main configuration dialog, and we will see the new account in the 'Email Repositories' list. We can also edit or delete the details of that account.
Each GMail account offers 1000 megabytes of storage. As our storage requirements grow, we can register multiple accounts. FileBunker will automatically use a new account as old ones fill up. However, we must note that if we delete an account containing files backed up to it, those files will not be accessible from FileBunker. In conclusion, FileBunker is an excellent file backup software that utilizes GMail accounts securely and efficiently.
