FreeNX is software that provides a NoMachine/NX-compatible terminal server implementation, allowing users to remotely access Linux or other Unix-like systems.
FreeNX is a collection of Bash scripts that comprises of approximately 3000 lines of code. It is important to note that the project offers no support, apart from what the users may find in the mailing list. In order to run FreeNX, you must have the compiled NX sources from NoMachine.com installed. Although, most of the Linux distributions now include pre-compiled packages of FreeNX.
kNX is the original KDE NX Client that was developed at LinuxTag 2004 within two half-day hacking sessions. The purpose of creating kNX was to demonstrate how NX technology works and to provide a potential alternative for users who do not want to use NoMachine's interface. The FreeNX and kNX projects strive to maintain compatibility and interoperability with NoMachine's commercial NX products. The goal of these projects is to enable FreeNX server to work with NoMachine's (free-as-in-beer) NX Client, and to allow kNX Client to access any commercial NoMachine server product (Personal, SmallOffice and Enterprise Servers).
It is important to note that some versions of FreeNX and kNX are specific snapshot releases for respective 1.5.x snapshots by NoMachine. These releases are not expected to work with any other NX version from NoMachine. Overall, the FreeNX Server project and kNX Client are excellent open-source alternatives for NX technology that provides a convenient way to connect to remote desktop environments.
