The Java FTP client is a web-based software that allows users to run an FTP client directly in their web browser.
Aside from that, FTP Applet has several key features that make it an excellent software. Firstly, you do not need to install any software, which eliminates the need to install and support FTP client software. Secondly, it is cross-platform, and it is written in Java 1.1, which means it can run within virtually any web browser equipped with a Java runtime, including Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Thirdly, FTP Applet has firewall support that allows you to easily connect to any FTP server from behind a firewall. Fourthly, you can transfer files using either ASCII or Binary transfer mode. It can also upload entire directories with ease. Fifthly, it supports multilingual, which enables you to customize the text used in FTP Applet to match your locale. Additionally, you can customize the look and feel of FTP Applet to match your web site palette.
Furthermore, FTP Applet allows you to limit what your FTP users can see and do, thanks to its permissions support feature. It also features a transfer status monitor that monitors the status of file transfers and allows you to cancel a transfer at any time. If there is a lost connection due to network time-out, FTP Applet will automatically detect it and offer you the ability to reconnect.
FTP Applet is written in Java 1.1 and runs without any plug-in required when using Microsoft Internet Explorer for both Mac and Windows platforms. However, Netscape Navigator requires installation of Java Plug-In 1.3 or above. The software is digitally signed using a code signing certificate issued by Thawte, a trusted certificate authority, and has a small footprint of ~100K, offering very quick downloads.
Finally, the only limitation to the software is the evaluation banner displayed at the top of the applet. However, FTP Applet Evaluation is fully functional and an excellent software for users looking for a powerful FTP client component that runs within the web browser.
