FTPWebLog is a free software combining FTP and WWW log reporting functions.
My experience heavily customizing wwwstat led me to the conclusion that there was a need for a new program with enhanced flexibility. FTPWebLog is the result of this requirement. While wwwstat still does some things that are not available in FTPWebLog, like report filtering by date, FTPWebLog offers other benefits. It is also easier to customize to match a site's specific requirements.
The configuration of FTPWebLog is straightforward since most of the options are explained in the source for 'ftpweblog' and 'graphftpweblog.' Here is a beginner-friendly guide that can help you get started. First, identify where your access_log is stored, then change $LogFile in the 'ftpweblog' program to point to it. If you intend to use 'graphftpweblog,' set $GraphFTPWebLogURL in the 'ftpweblog' program to point to the URL where you intend to put the graphic report HTML file generated by 'graphftpweblog.'
Make all the necessary directories that 'graphftpweblog' will use to store the gif files it generates. Run 'ftpweblog' and direct its output to a file. Afterward, run 'graphftpweblog,' also directing its output to a file. Once these steps are done, you should have a report with ease. By fine-tuning the report options, you can make it as brief or as detailed as you desire.
In conclusion, FTPWebLog is a brilliant freeware tool. Its simplicity, ease of use, and flexibility makes it suitable for use in large sites. With FTPWebLog, you can generate comprehensive and customizable reports that will help you understand your site's traffic better.
