Gamazons is a Gnome software that offers a digital version of the Amazons board game.
Each player's turn involves two moves. First, the player moves one of their amazons to a new square. Then, they fire an arrow from the square the amazon landed on, which travels in a straight line in any direction and permanently blocks the square it lands on for the rest of the game. As squares become blocked off, players must carefully maneuver their amazons to section off territory and outmaneuver their opponent.
To play Amazons, users must have the Gnome 2 app installed on their system. From the main directory, they can enter the command "./configure" to generate necessary makefiles, followed by "make" and "make install" to compile and install the game. Then, typing "gamazons" will initiate gameplay.
However, some users may experience an error when running "./configure" on Red Hat 8, which can be resolved by installing the libgnomeui-devel-2.0.3-3 RPM file.
Amazons offers customizable player settings, allowing users to play AI vs AI or adjust other options to their preferring. Users can also utilize default overrides, such as the "Auto Finish" feature, which sets both players as AI with a 1-second think time when the game nears its end.
While some features, such as the network and help menus, have not been implemented yet, the game offers an enjoyable and challenging experience. Although the "undo" button does not function currently, its framework has been established and may be available in future updates.
