Getcontrol is a multimedia frontend software built for GNOME 2 interface. Its features enable easy control and management of multimedia files.
The playback relies on the powerful Gstreamer, so you can be sure you're getting high-quality sound and video. However, in the past, launching any player applications or even basic programs like XMMS was a bit of a hassle. In fact, it was so complicated that one user's wife couldn't navigate it at all, prompting him to take matters into his own hands.
Using Anjuta IDE and documentation from the gnome.org websites, the user developed their own user-friendly GUI, making the whole experience much more seamless. With the latest release of Getcontrol (version 0.1.7), they've made some exciting improvements.
Now, Divx playback from CDROM is an option, and streams can be supported with an XML configuration file. Controls, including Play/Pause/Stop/Mute/VolUp/VolDown, are now supported, while pressing the menu while watching a movie suspends the movie and takes you back to the main menu (with the option to restore the movie from the menu). Plus, a busy animation inspired by Mac OS X makes it clear what's happening when there's a lot of activity taking place.
Overall, Getcontrol project is a reliable and user-friendly multimedia frontend that should definitely be considered if you're looking for a better playback experience on your GNOME 2 device.
